Yesterday I had the humbling and honored opportunity to share my story and my art with the young scholars of Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY, along with 20+ other artists/writers and I couldn't think of a better way to spend my Thursday morning.
Through the innovative and continually revolutionary vision of Principle, Nadia Lopez, writers, artists of varying practices got to connect with the students in an intimate and empowering way under the MHBA Storytellers series. We got to stand in front of the class and share with them who we were, our backgrounds, our passions, our art our stories and they got to ask us the questions that burst from their hearts.
These are the moments in time that for which I do this art. To impact, touch, move, and inspire the future leaders of tomorrow. I truly felt full, and refreshed after an invigorating & fortifying morning, and I'm deeply grateful for Principal Lopez's Love, Compassion and Dedication to these students, these scholars and to shifting the narrative of not only Brownsville youth, but the Brownsville community as a whole, a community that I was born and raised in and can never deny.
